Art Therapy
Creative Art Therapy Counseling is a blend of art and psychology, using art making to help clients increase self awareness, explore emotions and solve problems. It’s a therapeutic modality that also encourages expression through creative work. It is particularly helpful for people who have difficulty discussing or connecting with their emotions, feelings and experiences.
Art is a means of communication and self-expression and has been throughout history. Cultures and religions around the world use imagery and symbols as part of the healing process. Art therapy is a natural continuation of this human practice and the use of art in a clinical setting is a deeply transformative experience, helping clients progress with their mental health goals.
Previous art experience or natural artistic talent isn’t needed to benefit from art therapy. The goal isn't to produce artwork for display, but to use art as an expressive language to explore the needs and hopes of clients. Art Therapists are licensed mental health professionals with advanced training in counseling and have a comprehensive understanding of the power the creative process has in therapy. As clinicians, art therapists conduct individual sessions as well as groups, often working in conjunction with a mental health team.
The program uses art therapy counseling as a mode of communication between therapist and client, tapping into the creative process and encouraging discovery of self-expression, personal insight and fostering of emotional well-being.
