for gifted adults
Having worked with gifted individuals and their families since 2006, the practice of Melissa Sornik, LCSW PLLC has identified a need for psychotherapeutic support and services for adults who are gifted, including those who are twice-exceptional.
Not unlike the children and adolescents we serve, gifted adults experience many of the same characteristics of intensity (intellectual, emotional, physical), high intelligence in one or more areas (academic or non-academic), independent/divergent thought processes, idealism, perfectionism, existential concerns, and isolation.
Gifted adults may also feel misunderstood. Professionals who are not familiar with a gifted profile may misunderstand or misdiagnose characteristic intensity, certain feelings, and behaviors, potentially promoting self-doubt about feelings and abilities.
Gifted adults may lack outlets and/or professional opportunities for their ideas and creativity, as well as support and accommodations for neurodiversity in the workplace.
The practice has built a safe, accepting environment for gifted children, adolescents, and their families, and we are now invested in providing the same for gifted adults. Gifted adults need a supportive and appropriate peer group and a space in which they can be their authentic selves. Our experienced practitioners offer an environment that helps gifted clients to identify and promote their strengths and talents, and talk about their feelings without shame.
Services for gifted adults include individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy and coaching.
